Nikon d600

I am about to pull the trigger and buy one of these, does anyone else have one here? I'd be keen to hear any feedback.

No help to you I'm afraid, but given that I've decided a D4 is too damn expensive and a D800 too many megapixels, I'm beginning to consider a D600 as my route into full frame camera so I'm interested to see what people think.

AFIK they have sorted the oil issue I think on new ones?

Its a competent camera with very few issues if your a nikon user.

Second tier performance in terms of fps and AF etc but still thats not bad.

That said, the D600 does seem to "tick the boxes" for me. Sensible price, sensible megapixels, twin card slots, fast (enough) FPS, part alloy body.

I love my D7000, just would like a full frame version, something roughly equivalent to the Canon 5D MK2. Seems to me that's pretty much what the D600 is.

ive got one, very happy with it apart from suffering a wee bit from the oil issue.

took a little bit of faffing about with menus to get it set up how i wanted it (mainly to do with the thumb wheels)

Reading the specs, it sounds like they've shoved the D3X sensor & D700/D3 AF into a D7000 body, for the money though its a cracking camera!

Not quite. The sensor is better than the D3x (imagine how owners of that feel!) but the AF isnt quite as good as the D700. Its basically a D7000 af system. Which is fine but tightly clustered in the centre.

Still amazes the price of new old stock/used D3Xs! I'd be pretty pee'd off if I'd not long purchased one then a prosumer camera camera came out with a better spec saying that the D800 pretty much made the D3X pointless.

It always staggers me that all Nikon FX cameras have 51 focus points - but all in the fking middle!

You have to remember the D3x has all the benefits of a proper pro model - more waterproof, twice the actuations before it's supposed to die and you can drive over them in a tank and they still work. The D800 feels very flimsy in comparison.

Its a physical limitation of the image circle and the mirror box size. You can have them closer to the edge if you want a longer register distance, a new mount and larger lenses...


Edit: though when we get decent on sensor PDAF you may see a better spread...

How unfortunately unlucky do you have to be before you spend more on D600's than you would have on one d3x?

This is true (D3 shooter myself ) but how many D3Xs ever ventured out of the confines of a studio, and at £5k plus man maths kicks in and says buy a H3/H4 blad

One thing's for sure the words 'foot' and 'shot' spring to mind when Nikon bought out the D4 and D800 out at the same time... Loads of us bailed out of the 4... (and as I'm sure you know) Nikon even put the price up of the 800 to try and stem the flow

Yeah, I got a pre-order quotes on a D800 for £2199, then a few weeks later it went up by (IRRC) £300, I've got serious upgraditus, but really can't justify spending the (considerable) extra to go from D3>D4 and I'm not sure the D800 would be for me, I'd miss the speed of the D3
