im happy with the camera and its fine except on the wide angle end of the std lens for some reason.

Not quite grasping the issue or concern - you've a camera body that is acting up, bought from a (the only?) authorised Canon refurb seller, whom have explained they don't service products, but just resell them?
If the item as bought less than 6 months ago, you're quite within your rights to invoke the Sale of Goods Act, and simply return for a refund, repair, or replacement.
If more than 6 months, then you would need to prove the fault has existed since day one, rather than rely on presumption, and therefore have it repaired or replaced.
