Nikon launches pocket compact with DX sized sensor

They're all at it these days aren't they? Stuffing both crop and full frame sensors into compacts.

So Nikon felt the need to join in with the Coolpix A.

Looks nice but I think it needs some sort of zoom lens if they are actually planning on selling any.

I agree, but having said that, Fuji have flogged heaps of X100 cameras, which is has a fixed lens, and isn't even remotely pocket sized like the Nikon despite having the same APS-C sensor size.

I have an RX100 and I find the Zeiss zoom on it to be quite handy, plus it starts at F1.8 rather than the 2.8 of the Nikon.

If you REALLY want a fixed lens 'jacket pocket' compact with a big sensor, the full frame Sony RX1 is still king ding-a-ling:

Seen it handled it.

The manual focus ring unscrews allowing you to pop a lens hood on - good.
The power up time is excellent. Low shutter lag too. Build beautifully. A little pricey (but I am comparing with a P7000 bought two years ago. Spec is quite "dSLR-like", I'd have one in a shot compared to the 7000.


BUT.

I've also handled the new Fuji X20. An inclined to think that a better purchase (pending anyone testing them seriously). For me Nikon service (including after sales) is a known quantity cf Fuji. (But I have come so close to buying Fuji since S3 - no! In fact back to film slr days with the (?) 705/805 etc....

That Nikon looks like a Sigma DP.
I would say Fuji has an excellent service dept, but some X10 owners would say otherwise, inc one whose display was cracked upon return.
My own X-S1 may've had the blooming the original sensors suffered from - I took a few photos, and I thought it did - so it was sent off, and returned all within the space of 3 working days, which happened to have a weekend between them.

That Nikon reminds me of my old Minox. Same sort of tiny size, 35 mm film for those that are of a young disposition.

I see the Sony RX-1 is down to *only* £2.5k now. I've searched down the back of the sofa, but no luck.

Should stay off this section. Went to check a website for Coolpix and ordered D7100 instead.

Hope so :-). Does look nice. Spent ages looking at an upgrade before and let it go cold. Was recommended the D7000 back then.

We'll see how long it takes to arrive.

I took an RX1 out to play for a while and was seriously unimpressed. Yes its got a big sensor, but no , it just felt and worked like a P&S and didnt have anything working for it. Unless there was absolutely no light you'd be just as well off with any other large apsc P&S

Nikon thing looks ok but the markets awash with similar now.

My thoughts are quite the opposite about the RX1. You can put an excellent EVF on it if you don't like not having a viewfinder.

You should have persevered and checked out the files. The image quality is absolutely epic. Noticeably better than my Canon 5D2. You'd need a D800 to better it.

Probably among the best 35mm/FF image quality on the market in a package that will fit in your jeans.

I keep hoping they will come down in price but the weakening £ ain't helping and apparently Sony are selling more than they expected.

Nothing, but nothing, offers such high IQ in such a small package.

The thing is that - and the Nikon launch smacks of this - someone sat watching those adverts which go "It's LIKE a Volkswagen...." turned it on its head and said: "Look, we can FLOG STUFF". Firms like Nikon are not financially secure (any more) and this is a market that they are trying to create. We'll make it "Like a dSLR".

Sure there's room for: camera phones, compact cameras that are a step up from camera-phone, middle ground (used to be "bridge" cameras, but now) interchangeable lens doofahs and all-singing-all-dancing dSLR and Medium Format cameras for either speed or top quality.

I'm pretty sure that the entire world market cannot stand all these middle of the road gadgets and someone, whether Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic or Sony will get burnt. These things will be (just as good and) cheap as chips in two to three years because no one can flog any more - my prediction!
