Recommend me a good canon DSLR

Basically on the hunt for a DSLR, i've used them in the past after borrowing friends for car shows etc so used to using them, want something a bit beginner-intermidiate i guess? I'd rather stick to canon's as i've had cameras by them and happy with them.
Price i suppose maybe keeping it below a grand, if i could get a body, 18-55 and possibly a long range lens with that then i'd be pretty happy

By my maths that leaves £161 for filters, bag, a few lessons etc. I took a 10 week course on digital photography (£75) when I got my first DSLR, helped a great deal get accustomed to the buttons, functions and their relationship to each other and subsequent effect on the image.
If you head over to Youtube you will find a great deal of interesting reviews of the D7000. Everything from the amusing (with interesting real time shots) to technical.

Are you looking for new or would you consider used (with warranty)?
New you would be looking at the Canon 650D with a 18-55 or 18-135 lens and enough left over for something a bit longer if you want it.
Used: http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/ comes reccomended a lot on another photography forum, although I've not used it myself.
For your budget, I'd be looking at a used Canon 50D (£390), Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (£200) and a 70-200mm f4 L (£400).
Depending how tight the budget is having a seperate flash is a lot better than using the one in camera. Third party flashes can be had for a lot less than the Canon own brand models. Just make sure you get one with ETTL (auto flash power).
ETA: The above was to your budget, If you're starting out, a 40D (£260) with the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and the Canon 55-250mm (£120) will be excellent to start with for only ~£580. If you look after your kit it'll hold it's value well should you come to sell/upgrade.

I suggest the Canon 60D with twin kit lenses of 18-55mm and 55-250mm. That's a decent starter DSLR and two reasonable lenses for the money, both of which have image stabilisation. If you're willing to buy a s/h body, then there is nothing wrong with 450D-650D. 400D are getting a little long in the tooth, but still a good performer and can be had for practically nothing these days.And if you did that, it'll save on the ££ which means you can buy lenses, and having a good couple of lenses means way more than a good body.
So here's my suggestion, find a nice 500D/550D body which gives you 15MP which is quite decent, a decent DIGIC processor on the camera (nicer images at higher ISO), and a bit more buffer to play with if you're doing sport type stuff.
A good all round lens (and I mean good) is the 15-85mm, and then get yourself a (s/h probably) UWA (10-20) lens or a decent telephoto (70-300) depending on whether you are going wide or long.
At HDEW you could get the 650d, 18-55mm, 55-250mm and 50mm for well under £700.
That still leaves £300+ for another decent lens.
ETA: You could probably add the 100mm macro lens (non-IS) to your collection for that money.
Oh, and all of that would be new!
