Nikon 100mm Lens Disected

One of my Nikon lenses, 100mm Macro, developed a fault which Nikon service quoted £600 to repair.

Better to buy a new lens but what to do with the old one?

I was interested to track the exact cause of the fault, even though I knew there was no chance of fixing it myself. So I slowly took the lens apart and I was staggered by the amount of circuitry and technology that is packed inside the lens.

There are nearly 200 pieces that make up this lens and this isn't even a zoom lens!

I thought I would share the photo I took that shows the components all lined up.

Re-assembly is the reverse of the dis-assembly

It would make an interesting sculpture or mobile...

That was the problem - it was 5mm too short...
