GoPro Hero 3 - Colour correction help?

Hi All,

I've been banging my head against a wall a bit, i've had this gopro for a couple of weeks and i'm struggling to get the kind of shots i want. I know alot of it is done in post production to get the professional look but i can't seem to replicate it.

I think my problem is with colour correction, I have watched just about every tutorial out there and while they show you the tool's to use, none exlain how to use the colour wheels correctly and what to be looking for in the image, i think this is where i'm falling down.

So, can anyone get me pointing in the right direction?

It just doesnt seem to 'pop' or 'jump' out at you as being colourful and wonderful looking.

Rubbish in rubbish out

You are off to a bad start filming on an overcast day.

The gopro type cameras have tiny sensors and are not very good in low light, try going out first thing in the morning when the light is better.

Is this always going to be the case with the gopro? Ie, its not much use with uk weather?

I've been using it mostly to do aerial filming from my helicopter but as I said before, the shots just don't look good. I was under the impression I needed to learn post production skills to get the results I wanted.

Perhaps you could post some examples of what you'd like your footage to look like?

All the featured videos that look amazing on gopro's website, are usually because they're on a sunny day, sun low in the horizon, nearing golden hour- and also because they're a stunning variety of sports, in some amazing locations!

Cloudy day in suburban Britain, just doesn't compete. But if you post some examples of what you'd like your footage to be, it might be easier to see what you mean.

Though the go pro 3 has a teeny sensor, its one of the best sports / mini cams out there. Its not too bad in low light - a college of mine filmed a peep show style, point of view poker scene, in an old bank vault, a few weeks ago. Used a gopro 3, and a few basic film lights - came out not too bad for such a teeny camera.

This is possibly a bad example, but if the promo video at 0:32 you can see an overcast show that looks like it's been edited to have a HDR look to it, i certainly like that:

I quite like the way the blue's and yellow's in this video seem dominent, it makes the video look really colourful:

Is that all really just because of the lighting?

How does your footage look with ProTune off?

The video in post 3 was with pro tune off.

I've heard this softens the image though and it's better to colour correct in post prod.

Oops.

I've not been able to look at the videos as I've only got a 3G data connection at the moment.

My understanding is that ProTune is like shooting raw with a DSLR, out of camera the quality looks worse and it takes a fair bit of post production skill/knowledge to get it looking good.
