Canon charger won't charge 3rd party batteries?

Has anyone come across this issue before?

I've just bought a 60D and amusing it on a shoot this week and due to my spare batteries not arriving yet, had to nip out and grab a Duracell replacement from Curry's.

Sadly, the bloody thing would not take a charge from the wall charger that came with the 60D.

Even more annoyingly, the extra batteries I ordered are third party's as well so now I'm worried they won't work either.

Can anyone confirm/deny that the canon LC-E6 charger won't charge 3rd party batteries?

Also, assuming that it won't, can anyone recommend a third-party charger?

Bonus points awarded for where I can get one first thing tomorrow morning in Glasgow!

The charger is designed to only charge Canon batteries. Apparently it says this on the box.

I can't recommend a third party one in case it kills you :-)

There's a Calumet in Glasgow, they should sort you out with a Hahnel or similar that won't be as sniffy about what you feed it. I've got a Delkin multi charger which takes different plates and can charge two at once? You could have a lp-e6 on one side and some AAs on the other side for example.

Hmm, it does say that but I'm surprised. I thought duracell would be 'big name' enough to make something compatible?

They don't mention the issue on the packaging...

I guess they didn't fit the necessary chip in the battery.

I was looking at a 6D in a shop the other day, and a third party battery wouldn't even power the camera. It was a Hahnel (I think) and worked fine in a 5D3, but the newer cameras must have changed how they communicate with the battery.

Why buy an aftermarket battery - plenty of canon originals on ebay, I've bought several for 7d, 6d 60d from HK or Singapore for low prices

Because my spares haven't arrived yet and I was in the middle of a shoot and needed power fast. And £60 seems a bit steep for a temporary measure!

Cheer for the info all - I guess that's the problem (though my natural suspicion of Curry's/PC World makes me think they've just been sitting in a stockroom for years...

As luck would have it, one of my contacts dropped off a bag of fully charged batteries first thing this morning to get us through the rest of it.

Result!

Will probably dive up to Calumet over the weekend anyway and see what they've got.

Rubbish. Have you actually tried or did you read it somwhere?
My 6D works with TP batteries. You just don't get the power meter reading.

I'm sure some, maybe even most, third party batteries are fine, but this one definitely did not power a 6D at all. The same battery worked in a 5D3 I was comparing alongside. It had plenty of charge in it. I am not 100% certain if it was a Hahnel or not so don't rely on my memory about that.

What do you think of the 6D? I went for 5D3s in the end, replacing 5D2s.
