Please recommend me a lens for Motocross / Enduro events!

Hello all
My other half races Enduro and motocross, and I usually end up going along for the weekend and getting photos. I have a 550d but currently only the kit lens and a 50mm prime.
Im looking for something much sharper than the kit lens and probably with more zoom, and I can only afford one lens so nothing too extreme. ideally a 70-200 and a nice wide 10-22 or something would be perfect to cover all my options (I do mountain biking stuff too, so a wide angle would be nice for that) but can only afford the one.
I can't afford the 70-200 canon which I know is a brilliant, fast and sharp lens... but my absolute maximum budget would be about £450 second hand or new.
I've been looking at the Sigma and Tamron 18-200 lenses which seem okay but if they're not a great deal sharper than the kit lens then I'd rather not waste my money?
I can get track access to most events so distance isn't a problem but it'd be nice to frame things better and zoom in on the action to get a nicer depth of field and be a bit more imaginative with the framing, as well as not having to walk as far (most events are sprint enduros this year, which are single 10 minute laps, and i usually need to be back at the van after photographing the other half) so a reasonable zoom would be great.
Another issue is the aperture, the sigma and tamron are 3.5-6.5 i think, which is okay in daylight, and probably be okay in the forest but I can't go for something with a narrow widest aperture as I don't have the cash to invest into a flash setup.
Main thing is it needs to be sharp!! and have a minimum zoom of 70ish but still be useable in other situations at the wider end of the scale.

You would be able to pick up a used 70-200 f4 non is for less than your budget.
