18-55 Kit Lens replacement

I'm looking to replace the 18-55 kit lens on my canon (its the older non IS one)

I'm looking at the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS theres also the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC which is the same focal length and aperture but significantly cheaper.

Also have now found the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 OS which has a slightly longer focal length but loses the f2.8 at full zoom. Also cheaper.

anyone used these lenses and can recommend them? is the sigma worth the extra £100 or so over the Tamron?

Its not any of the lenses that you mentioned but I replaced my 18-55 with a Canon 17-40mm L and its brilliant.

Do have a 50mm f1.8 prime but sometimes find myself in situations where i cant step back to frame the pic especially indoors so really looking for a versatile everyday lens which will give good quality indoors/low light and outdoors. Also trying to keep the budget as low as possible.

Just buy the newer 'IS' version of 18-55. For £58 that i paid for mine its an awesome lens, of totally different design to the original 18-55 which you have, chalk and cheese is the the way I'd describe the difference.

I have the Sigma 17-70, it replaced my kit 18-55.
It's a good all round lens, the extra zoom reach is handy and images are sharp. I use it as a general do-everything lens.
I used mine in the studio at the weekend with pretty good results.

I've been looking at replacing mine too on my 550D, would love a 15-85 but as a student can't really afford it's price. Instead looked at the Canon 17-85 used on eBay, tend to go for around £170 but have read too many mixed reviews.

thanks everyone for the advice went for the Tamron in the end. Arrived yesterday not had much of a chance to play yet.
