Can someoneone recommend one of these as granddaughter is asking for one for her birthday.

No chance, until you at least put some meat on the bones of your post.

Budget, age of granddaughter, type of photography she's into, post processing at home or snapshots to throw up on Facebook straight out of the camera (wifi access being available)?
All that and other info will help shape the style/brand/model of camera best suited to her needs and wishes.

Well that was short lived. She has changed her mind and does not really want/need one. Typical teenager 15yr old.

I have the FujiFilm HS30- I believe the 50 was just released. Great camera- gives you the ease of a Point and Shoot with some DSLR functions.

A major pro- and the reason why I got it- its the manual zoom lens (24mm-720mm)- light weight and you don't have to cart around heavy lenses!

Some draw backs- the sensor is quite small, so its worth investing in a flash. Also, you can only go up to 30sec expsoure at an iso of 100 (darker conditions)- the higher the iso, the lower the exposure time. I've made some cracking shots of the moon and constellations, but you need to be careful in certain lighting conditions.

My plan is a year or two of the bridge and then a step up to proper DSLR.

Classic and typical teenage fanciful notions - lasts as long as they manage to maintain being on their best behaviour, all of 5-10 minutes in both cases!
