Cheers for posting this steve, first time poster but long time lurker so please go easy guys!!!
Im very much a beginner/ amateur so nothing for you guys to worry about.
Just wondering if there is a website that gives info on what can/ cannot be photographed.
(without poking 400mm thru peoples front windows) ha ha
The reason i ask is i live next to a rather large oil refinery.... mmmmm bare/ bear? with me...
Im into night photography, startrails/ milky way/ light painting ect
so would like to photograph said oil refinery.
I walk my dog past this place every night so know they do security checks.

Just wondering what powers security have/ have not? before police get involved.
(If i whip my camera and tripod out)? canon 650d, like i said begginer!
Thought id ask here instead of speed/ plod /law.

Does anyone have first hand experience??

Im not a dodgy fella, just new to photography so havnt got clue..

There are reams and reams of information about what powers police and security have, but a general word of advice - be polite if stopped.

This article is old news - the stop happened in 2009, the Met settled in 2010. Whilst there are still police officers out there that don't know their powers the vast majority have been educated. I speak as someone who sits on both sides of the fence on this subject.

tenohfive yes i know its old news, Im aware theres reams of info on the subject.
Was just after some basic info on what the law/ accepted photography wise.
Obviously your a tog, but what other side of the fence you on? Police/ security?
If you dont mind me asking.
Im a newb so wont get offended if you tell me to mind it...

As far as I am aware actual security have very little powers, best to ask in SP&L

Surely if it's dark they won't be able to see you?

Personally I would just go out and take the photos! As long as you are not on private property they can't really do much. Another option might be to just knock on the security hut's window and say that you are going to be taking some photos so they don't get worried if they see you and call the police.

Private security guards have no more powers than you do. If you are on private property, they may ask you to leave. If you are on public land and they tell you to stop photographing, you may ignore them.

Yes on public land so ill take a gamble and ask....
