Is there anything to be gained putting a GOOD lens on a Canon 600d

One of the best photos I have taken was on a 350D body with the 100-400L lens. Without that lens I doubt I would have got the shot.

I know nothing about photography but I would hazard a guess that the CCDs in all (modern) DSLRs are capable enough to discern the improved optics of more expensive lenses.

I don't see why not. I have a 600d and use a 24-105 as my main lens. It's much nicer to use and faster to focus so I get a lot more shots I go for. I am strongly considering an L replacement to my 70-300 is usm which I think is too soft and slow especially for anything fast moving which is when I use it.

Things I like...
Less aberrations (not necessarily sharper but this really ups quality)
Sharper (not loads by any means, but nice to have.
Much faster focusing (big plus)
More usable appature range most non pro can be a bit faster but only in certain ranges.
That red ring
Build quality
Usability much higher, manual focus override etc
upgradeabilty (I can keep these if I got FF)

Things I dislike...
Looks silly and unbalanced on a tiny crop camera
Heavy (compared to the non pro kit)
Range is more sensible for a full frame i.e. I have bought a tokina 11-16 to cover the wide element I lost from the kit 17-55

The main thing I found is much like any gear you wont twist it on and take pro shots. However it will make you more likely to get what you want.

If you have to choose, put an expensive lens on a cheap body, not the other way round.

What lens are you talking about?

But in short, yes.

Yes it will be worthwhile. The 600d is an "average camera" in so far as it's towards the lower end of the canon line-up and doesn't have the features and ergonomics of some of the higher end cameras, but it has the same sensor as the 60D and 7D and is capable of producing images with the same image quality as these cameras. If anything good glass is even more important on the latest generation 18MP APS-C cameras as the ability of the lens to resolve onto a smaller sensor becomes the limiting factor and with less capable glass all those pixels crammed into a small sensor are wasted.

Camera bodies should be viewed as consumables - you'll want a new one every 5 years or less - whilst lenses are a lifelong investment.

Do it. My impressions of the 70-300 IS USM were similar - it was fine on my old 400D - on the more pixel dense 18mp APS-C cameras I found it disappoitning. I replaced it with the 70-300L and it's night and day, lighening fast focus and razor sharp images.

What is it you want, wide angle? telephoto? walk around?

You don't have to go L, in fact, if you want wide angle it's best not to! (on your body that is) Is there a budget?

Good glass is. Never wasted.
The day I put a 24-70L on my 350d was a revelation.
