Canon 60D v Nikon D7000

Its is about 5 years since i last purchased a camera. currently own a old 40D but also a G12.

I thought i decided on which camera (D7000), but then started to look at additional lenses then got totally confused with Nikon. I just do not understand there lens range, but i understand the Canon lineup.

I would like to buy the Nikon this time, but i cant seem to match up the lenses that i want in the nikon range.

If i do end up buying the Canon, it would be the below kit list.
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5/5.6L USM Image Stabilized
60D Body + Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (If in a Kit)
If kit lens is not available i would like this lens Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens

Can anyone help with which Nikon lenses would give comparable results to the canon L series?

It won't always be a like-for like match but the more expensive it is, the better it will be. Anything over £1,000 is going to be very good. So you just compare focal lengths, aperture, and loot

Thanks Simpo. The one that i really want is the 100-400, but i prefer the Nikon Body. I have been going through the shops over here (Abu Dhabi). But no one seems to have a clue in any of the camera shops, they just read the spec sheet on the box and have no real knowledge.

I really miss some of the local specialist camera shops we have in the UK but they are now disappearing.

If range is more important to you than max aperture, a quick look finds two Nikon 80-400s:

The second one will focus faster as it's AF-S, which is the Nikon equivalent of Canon's USM. And it's £2K+ so is unlikely to disappoint!

If £2.5K is a bit steep you can trim a bit off the long end and save £2K with the 70-300VR:

I have a 60D and use 2 lenses: 15-85mm EF-S and 70-300mm L.

That gives a perfect focal range for me - though they aren't the fastest in the world.

Um.... Then why not keep them and just change the body for the newer model (on which you can probably crank up ISO the equivalent of three stops without noticing)?

Because he's not the OP...

It is not beyond the wit of man to find out that Nikon make a 16-85mm, which is 1mm wider than a Canon 17-85mm and slightly faster at the wide end, so I really don't see what the problem is.

I have decided to go for the D7000. Better deal after cashback and claiming the VAT back as i am no longer a UK resident. 550pounds for the D7000 with a 18-105 VR ED Kit lense.

Will be looking through the lens option later to see which one would be ok for my needs.
