Leica mini M

This is going to be launched in a couple of weeks, I hoped from the name it would be a relatively affordable 'M' type camera with interchangeable lenses.

Instead it's this.

What they've done is put the 'M' on an upmarket point and shoot that doesn't even have a viewfinder. Does this mean they aren't interested in preserving the M brand? Possibly a clue that the traditional rangefinder camera's days are numbered.

Hmm, could be tempted by that.

I just bought a D Lux for times when I don't want to carry a proper kit with me and it is lovely. I used a D Lux 6 at Photokina with their EVF which was great to use, you could even use it as a waistlevel finder.

One of these with an EVF might be a plan, although at the moment I have my sights set on a Pentax 645D now they've dropped the price.

Is it not just a rebrand of the X series ? (X1, X2) looks very similar.

Do agree though the new M is a step away from tradition with all the features and add on's it has. Although I would love a M monochrome.

I'm sure if you stab it with a compass point in the right place it will become monochrome.


But you could use up a lot of cameras finding out the right place...

Viewfinderless cameras are taking a huge chunk of the market in Japan, and the forecast is Europe will be following suit, albeit at levels 2 years or so behind Asia Pacific.
Would seem Leica know this or have designed it primarily for the Far East market, and may concentrate their sales efforts there for the next year or two.

They have my interest, but if it really turns out to be a "zoom", I'm out. We'll see.

If the Monochrome had the same retail price as the M240 I would strongly consider to save up for it. Actually, I'd be even happier if they sold it for less.
