Had some great weather (for a change) at Spa last month for the World Endurance Championship, just a shame the race finished at 8pm, if it ran another 30mins it would have given me some even nicer light to play with! Was an awesome event to watch (and hear - especially the R18's), very underrated series IMHO.

Yes I find pre-focusing to be much more conducive to getting what you want. At first I used to try use continuous AF to track a car while I panned. But often found things to be out of focus. I then tried constantly re-focusing by repeated half pressing while I panned, which worked better, but introduced more to think about while you are trying to get the shot. Finally I tried pre-focusing (spot on track, or on a slow lap its possible to focus on a car), switch to MF (and an F stop for good DoF) and just concentrate on the panning and it works really well.

Have you tried switching AF to the * button (on Canon, I think you can also back button focus on Nikon too), that gives to the best of both worlds and makes it easy catch action that is away from where you were prefocussing.

Once again Tim, the context/composition and use of colour make for me some of the most pleasing images of motorsport I can remember seeing .
Stick to racing cars - stay away from people .

I have an NEX-6 now. So buttons on the back are at a premium. I shall investigate!

Lol, glad to be back in the good books .... Although I'm not so comfortable with the candid people shots, they're a fun challenge, and since I'll be back in Japan in October (where I'll see a Super GT race among other things) you can expect more of both!
