Hi Folks

I'd like to buy a gift for a Nikon-owning friend. What is a good value equivalent to the Canon nifty-fifty as there seem to be a few different options on the Nikon front. Will this do the job?

I think her camera is one of the crop bodies, probably a 3100.

The 1.8D won't autofocus on the D3100.

The closest to the nifty 50 on a crop body would be the Nikon AF-S 35mm f1.8G which is a really great lens and costs around £145 (35mm * 1.5 = 52.5mm equiv)

The key thing to remember with the cheaper crop bodies is that they don't have a focus motor so for the Nikon range of lenses you need to look for the AF-S moniker.

There is also a 50mm AF-S 1.8G:

Much appreciated!

I'll get the 35, should be a bit more flexible.

It was the first lens I bought, really really sharp and great in low light.

+1 on the 35mm - I spent ages pondering this and went for that.

A great little lens that is more often on than off my D3100 smile
