Who's Using Film?

So with the delivery of my Linhof Technikardan I am back to having a freezer full of 120.

How many on here are still using film? If so what have you got? eBay seems to be a veritable goldmine of old gear, I paid £1000 for my Linhof outfit, with wide angle and standard bellows, Symmar 100mm, fresnel and 6x7 back, the same kit is still available to buy new, at a cost of over £6000!

I have a film camera but know absolutely nothing about it or if it even works anymore

Its a minolta SRT-100x given to me by a work collegue after his dad found it at the bottom of an old wardrobe in the garage, it has 3 different lenses with it as well

Would love to give it a go but I have no idea where to start (I guess put some film in and see if it works) m

I've just bought an old Canon AE1 as it was the first decent camera I owned many years ago. I have noticed that I stare at the back of it after taking a photo as if a thumbnail image is going to pop up for me to check

You put some film in and then it works much the same as a DSLR. You then just have a roll of film full of bits of silver instead of a piece of plastic full of pixels

I must admit the back of film SLRs seems awfully blank now... then again when I first saw a DSLR it looked like the flight deck of Concorde...

Did many years with 120 in medium format. Lots of fun but lots of money. Wish you all the best Mark... You have a shed load of talent and enthusiasm to get some great results.

I did a bit of film work while I was at college. The most significant difference I found was that there is no 'undo' button in the dark room. After spending ages working on a print, if you mess it up then it's back to start all over again...

Did I read correct yesterday that you can get a P45 digital back for 6k to suit?

Yes, a Phase One back starts at about £2500 for an older 16mp back, a P45+ can be bought for £6-7000.

Wow, Linhof. Tasty stuff. Takes me back a bit. I couldn't afford Linhof at the time and used Horseman and a Toyo. Didn't shoot any roll film on them, but I guess that'll speed things up quite a bit.

Good to see someone is still using it.

Lovely camera, if you have the 5x4 version, you could have fun if you can put a 6x12 roll film back on it.

Have a few film cameras, Sinar, 'blads etc, sometimes put some B&W through a FE2, but you get better results of printing in a darkroom than scanning. Also have a Wista and 19 sheets of Polaroid type 59 which hasn't dried out, so might do some image transfers.

P1 backs are tricky to use with ground glass screen as the area is so small, better to use live view. Also tricky with slip and slide movements, really need geared movemnets.
