If anyone has missed the recent adverts...

The 'imagine...' series has a documentary about the photographer Don McCullin (The Sunday Times photographer for many years) tonight at 10:35pm on BBC1.

I'm guessing it is the same documentary that was released on disc earlier this year? - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mccullin-Blu-ray-David-Mor...

It isn't an easy watch, it's a honest look at what it means to be a war photographer. It's a difficult, affecting and superbly made documentary.

'I got a great photo of the others ducking' said the war tog - from his hospital bed.

Too depressing for me I'm afraid.

Great documentary, shows the what photojournalism is all about, showing the worst and best of humanity in it's rawest form. It's not just that he took harrowing pictures, and he did, but they also have that sense of composition that make them timeless. One of the greats of photojournalism but at the same time a conscientious man as well.

Makes pretty pictures of scenery, cars, birds, wannabe fashion photographs somewhat irrelevant.

Yes, unless these other images prove to be distracting enough that they stop at least some of the world's more anti-social types adding to the numbers of people participating in violence and so on.

A feint dream perhaps worth hanging on to.

Maybe.

Bumped into this today - http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/Don_McCullin.d...

It's an (obviously Canon-heavy) 30min documentary about Don McCullin looking at moving from film to digital.

Thought it might be of interest smile

A brilliant documentary. One of the lasting memories I have is that he never, ever smiles. Not surprisingly....

Another one worth seeking out is War Photographer, following James Nachtwey in the Balkans, Indonesia as well as in the darkroom. A great doc, Oscar nominated.

It did make me think that the horrors of IS are typical goings on in war, by the Falklands, the government were managing the press to new levels, now with the onset of social media these acts are back in our living rooms, and our cosseted generation are shocked.

Thanks for the links about Mr McCullin.

Enjoyed the BBC documentary.

Used to see (and admire) a lot of his work in the Sunday Times when it was a proper paper.

Wow. Just wow.

That has to be one of the finest examples of the documentary genre I have ever seen.
