best cheap compact ?

any recommends out of these ... or basically the best camera in this price range (for a novice):

Mrs Seight has owned and destroyed a succession of Canon Powershot super zooms - I think the current yet to be dropped/drowned/driven over is an SX230. I've always found the IQ a bit dissapointing - for a few dollars more my Canon S100 has much better IQ albeit without (and probably because of) the allure of the massive focal range.

Ah, okay... Then anything will do.. Lots of cameras in that size that will take decent pics. Most are too big to be 'keep in the pocket' and way too poor to compare to DSLRs. They are the 'Vauxhall Astras' of cameras.
