Small camera shops... Canon 10-22mm content - help please

I've been looking endlessly for a canon 10-22mm lens which I'm trying not to pay full retail for.

£640 seems to be the standard price in most shops, selfridges in London today had one in for £980... I questioned this and the salesman said it was a new and improved one

Camera world seems to have them new for £480 which seems to good to be true...

Then currys / pc world outlet has them for £415... But I'm not sure I trust the condition...

Does anyone have any dealings with any of these 3, either good or bad? Or know how they can offer them this cheap?

With the Curry's one, it does look like you still have 14 days to return it if you change your mind - so not too big a risk and quite a saving

I've never heard of Ashton Little and something about their website, not least the fact that I can't see a real address.

Cameraworld does seem a bit of a bargain though doesn't it? Maybe check it is official UK stock and I notice their FAQ does state that their website isn't linked to their stock control system yet so they may be out of stock.

I've used Camera World many times and would definitely recommend them without hesitation.

Two things must ye know about the 10-22mm ultra wide.

First, it is ultra.

Second, it is wide.

Seriously. Two things must ye know about the 10-22mm ultra wide:

1. If you're shooting lots of clear blue sky outdoors, don't use a CPL. You will end up with uneven polarisation across the frame and it's nigh impossible to remove in post. However, for indoor work, (or indeed anything other than blue skies) a CPL is great
2. A lens hood is a must. At 10mm this thing is ridiculously wide and flare will be a factor without it
3. You can't take it forward if you go FF, because EF-S lenses project back into the camera body, and may interfere with the mirror on FF Canon cameras
4. I lied about "two things"

DigitalRev are £490, that'd be a grey import.
Kerso is £540, import but will have a UK receipt and people have successfully claimed on UK warranty on goods supplied by him.

Ordered off cameraworld... Then they rang this morning to tell me they don't have stock and that it would be at least two weeks :-( with no guaranteed dates after the two weeks, so I cancelled the order.

The search goes on :-(

Found another reasonably priced place, but need to wait for camera world to refund my account as they took the money instantly.

Have you considered the Sigma 10-20mm?

I was after the Canon 10-22mm and i was advised to try the Sigma instead as they give similar results (apparently). I looked online and they are much cheaper than the Canon, especially if you get a used one from somewhere like MPB Photographic.

Got on London Camera Exchange in Nottingham in the end, they threw in the lens hood for free as well although I did pay a lot more than some Internet prices.

Peace of mind to have a local shop to go to though, and keeps the high street going.

Oly played with it indoors so far, its epic, I'll not be asking for estate agents to take photos again haha.

Can't wait to get it our doors in the daylight

Really agree with this - do try and buy from a local store if possible.

As long they make an attempt to haggle a bit / include a hood (that I'd need anyway) then I really value having a store local to me

Very happy with the lens but its bloody hard to find subjects suitable to capture.

Not so happy about the fact exactly 1 week after buying mine the nationwide price for the lens dropped to £499 even at big places like currys

I use mine as my walkabout lens, albeit one where you have to get closer to things than you may previously have been comfortable with.

Be careful using a CPL on such a wide lens, it's easy to ruin images.

The adapter ring goes on the front of your lens. The holder goes on the adapter ring. The rectangular filters go in the holder.

I've not found it so much of a problem yet, it's the main reason I went for such an expensive CPL as reviewe said it combated vignetting and uneven skies almost completely even at 10mm.

At some angles it occurs obviously, but if you set the pics up right it's fine 95% of the time.

I like it mainly for reflections off foliage, glass, vehicles... And most importantly water, nothing bets a polarised sea. You just get the effect any other way.
