I'm thinking of getting a Canon 20D. It would be my first SLR camera. What do you think? Also, which lens or lenses should I go for? (approx £500 to £1000 budget) I intend to use it to take motorsport pictures and general holiday pictures (i.e. Landscapes and friends / family).

Anything else I should know? Any good beginers guides?

The 20D looks great. I'm very happy with my 10D. Lenses? Well I use a 100-400IS for motorsport (you really need the 400mm end because you just can't get close enough most of the time. It's around £1000 however.

General I've got a 28-135IS which you can leave on all day, it's good for most things. If I could only have one lense this would be it. About £350-400.

For realy wide stuff I've got a Sigma 15-30mm. Remember that with a 20D multiply the mm by 1.6 so a 100mm lense is like a 160mm.

Look at this forum under my postings to see whats possible with a 28-135iS. All the motorsport shots i've posted here are with it.

Cheers

Phil

I have the 20D and use it with the Canon 100-400L IS lens for Motorsport.

I also use the 28-135 IS but on the 10D/20D with the 1.6x Crop factor it's not really wide enough for Landscapes, the Canon 17-40L is another good option.
