How much have you lost, through depreciation...

I bought a Canon camera, some years back. For around £900.
And a £900 lens. The performance was stupendous, nothing was lacking, noticeably, in any department.

Wanting to get shot of the camera, as I no longer shoot (time) I had a 30 second look on ebay, and to my surprise, one can pick up the same body for a mere £150. Brand new, apparently.

Ive not lost anything, as I enjoyed every moment of shooting and made far more than the cost of the hobby cost me financially.

Bit still, wow. £900 down to £150.
How does that happen, selling new clobber?
I had it in mind that the margins in electronics manufacture/retail were minuscule.

Or is someone growing an illegal plantation of trees which, when harvested, produce the body parts necessary to make older canon camera models (new) for virtually nothing.

Im sure Im missing something.
But in the same vein, Im sure others have looked back with the thought they 'lost' far more, as far as resale value goes.

It wont be £150 new, probably refurbished.

Note your lens should still be worth a few quid, what is it ?

Electronics lose money, probably worse than cars do.

Not much you can do, other than avoid the bleeding edge..

Mobsta, I'm very much looking forward to taking advantage of other people's gear lust by buying the very sort of cast offs you're describing. There's so much to choose from!

Never occurred to me because my basement shelf has a :Canon EF, Canon AE-1, AT-1, A-1, 20D, and probably a dozen lenses, plus all sort of filters and other junk. Never occurred to me to sell the things, just took the batteries out. I am sure my current 5D-1 and 5D-2 will go there too,plus the current lenses. I find myself using the Olympus now more than anything........

I paid nearly 3000 for my 1D Mark II and I was recently offered 270 for it in part exchange. Well, I decided to keep it.

I guess I've lost about £12k over 14 years of DSLR ownership.

The first DSLR I used my boss had paid, I think, about £15k for, and we couldn't give it away a few years later. I've seen pictures of one being used as an ashtray at the time.

Bodies depreciate fairly heavily after a few years, glass holds it value better, especially at the higher end.

I've probably lost around £2k in six or seven years over three bodies and several lenses.

I've not, I've made money on some kit and moved most on before it has depreciated.

24-70. The lens has a focusing problem. Last I enquired, it was nearly £180 for a service IIRC. Is that about right? (That enquiry was made several years ago, at Jessops). As I dont shoot, I didnt bother.

Recently had my Canon 24-70mm L repaired for a focusing fault by Canon at Elstree. It cost £130.
