What 77mm Filters

I'm looking for 2 77mm filters for a couple of Canon lenses.

I need a UV filter for general use and a bit of protection and a circular polarizing filter.

Was looking at Hoya, but am open to other suggestions...but even within the Hoya range, there seems to be a variety of different filters with little explanation as to why one is (in some cases much) dearer than the other.

I like Heliopan. But that are hard to get. Failing that B&W.

The first time I got the Heliopan I was impressed enough that I tossed the Hoya filters I had on other lenses.

To be totally honest, to keep crap off the front of the actual lens - I don't want to worry about giving it a clean if I get salt/sand/dust etc on the end of it and as a little bit of protection. I'm aware of the arguments both ways and it's my preference to have one

It's become a little bit of a PH "bee-in-the-bonnet" hasn't it - that firms are still marketing the hype that you need some of these filters!

To be honest, it's probably unnecessary, but these 2 lenses are £580 and £1,200(ish) and I think it's more of a mental thing. Just like the idea of being able to unscrew and replace if I really need to...sand gets everywhere in Africa if you're not careful

I seem to remember seeing some ads for plain lenses purely for protection with no attempt at any other filtering.

As for the Circ Pol - B&W works for me. Hoya do about 3 levels of quality (it seems). You would probably need the upper end in which case you are at or near B&W prices.

eBay may be worth a look. It was good to me.

Thanks for that - will have a gander on eBay. I guess as a buyer, if it turns out to be st, you've got the PayPal/eBay protection.

I can't make much sense of the Hoya different levels personally. I guess you need to be smarter than I to do so...
