Whats a decent printer without selling the house to pay for it (which would really piss the council off)

To be honest, I don't bother any more with getting a good quality photo printer. I personally stick to online labs as they are much cheaper and, more importantly, I've come to conclusion that you just cannot win when it comes to print quality.

I have a £70 HP that uses two cartridges (one black one multi) and as far as I can tell the photos look just fine. I think almost any printer now is 'photo quality' as long as you use the right paper and inks.

However as said online is easier and cheaper.

As mentioned: Online is much cheaper - unless you need immediate prints, settle for next day, and 1/3 the price.

I am through with home printing. Got a continuos ink system when I got fed up with buying cartridges and seemed to be constantly trying to get it to work.

Last time I was looking for a printer I was trawling through the choices and it struck me that I'd not actually printing a photo at home in years, so I went for an office-style printer for general use.

Last 'good' prints I did were done online, proper bound book in a quality i'd never have managed at home. Unless you need prints done quickly (like you're doing shots to sell immediately at an event) I'd look at the online services.

Canon Pixma MG5350 and ink from here http://www.inkredible.co.uk/inkredible-saver-ink-c...
It uses individual colour inks so no need to replace a whole multi cartridge when one colour runs out.
I also have had a string of crap home printers but this is better than the norm, fast and good quality.
I am still using the included cartridges and have done more printing than I ever have and only two of the colours are showing one segment used.

If you are looking for something better than average it's worth looking at some of the pro-labs - these guys are very reasonable and you are likely to see very significant improvements in quality over the likes of Photobox etc. because the images are colour balanced and corrected for contrast and density by an experienced lab technician, rather than a machine.
