Is there a great advantage for me buying PS 10 (£36) rather than PS 6 (£18)?

Photoshop 6 is ancient.

Yes, the basic tools and principles in the software are the same but the difference between the more up to date version will be massive. I've used PS7, CS3 and CS5 (what I currently own) and the difference from PS7 to CS5 is massive. The jump between CS3 and 5 isn't so big but there are loads of differences. The tab system for having multiple images open being one I couldn't live without now.

For the sake of £20, get the newer version.

Would these not be PhotoShop Elements? 10 is a relatively recent release

Sounds well dodgy to me. Elements will do 95% of full fat photoshop.

Okay, so it's not Photoshop, but Photoshop elements... which is fine - as I say, it does most of what the ff version does.

I'm sure this eBay vendor is legit; but what does happen a lot is that people upgrade their version of Adobe products then sell off the old media and serial numbers, which the license doesn't allow. The software should work (especially for something as antique as PSE6), but you can't then use upgrade pricing to get on to a current version

If you're not in a rush I'd add Elements 12 to your wish list, check every few days on Amazon - they cut the price to the £30-35 mark on every new version of Elements periodically.

ETA:

Having bought both though I'd add that for photography Lightroom 4 or 5 is much better IMO. Elements is handy for the occasional tweak (for me usually more delicate cloning) but I used LR for 95% of my photo's now. It's more expensive (I got LR5 for £65) but well worth the extra.

True story... If you do extensive editing, a fairly recent version of PS is worth it, but Gimp works, it doesn't have all the features, and your PS plugins won't work with it, but most good PS plugins have a standalone interface as well. If your trying to do some base editing, Lightroom is a really good tool as well. I have CS4, and I tried the trial version of CS5 when I was away for a few weeks, the difference was there, I would prefer to have CS5, but Im not gonna front all that money for the features I get, maybe CS6.
