Has anyone used Canon 300/4 L ?

I'm looking to build up my digital kit once more since I sold all my lenses about 5 years ago. I used to have 17-40 L, 70-200 2.8 IS, and a 400/5.6 L. Loved them all, but now I'm looking at upgrading with my new kit.

I did a lot of motor sport photography and the longer focal lenses, of course, were great for that. I'd love to get all those back some time soon, but I've recently been looking at the 300mm f/4 L IS. Never used one before, but it seems like a good deal for such a lens. Can anyone tell me if it's worth picking one up? Is it up to par with Canon's existing L range?

I have one, used on a crop and full frame body.

I get on with it really well, you'll know about the good bits from your 400, lightweight, built in hood, build etc......I think the 400 you had focuses a bit quicker though.

I find it's still pretty sharp wide open, and have had pretty good results with a teleconverter.
Although it has IS, it's not the latest version....still helps though.

I would recommend one.

Yes, had mine for years and it's been fine. Used to use it on film with no problems, but use it much less these days and recently I'd thought it just wasn't as sharp as I remembered it being, focus was off, etc. When I looked into the focussing microadjustment, I found it was way out on both my current bodies and it is now back to being excellent

I have one, its one of my favourite lens's. Very sharp indeed and well built.
