Hello all,

While out shopping today, my wife and I decided that for Christmas we shall buy a new camera for ourselves.

Unfortunately, we don't know too much about photography, so I thought I would seek help from the PH family.

Ideally, we are after a camera between £200-250. It needs to be simple to use and of good quality.

We will mostly be using it for taking pictures or our new born baby next year, as well as family and the odd cars at motorsport events.

Can anybody recommend a camera for us? And where is best to buy?

If you need more information, please ask me.

Thank you

You could ask 10 different photographers and get 10 different answers but my money went on a Canon S100 as a nice compact for when I couldn't be bothered with the DSLR. There's an S110 as well but I'm not sure it gives you much more to justify the extra cost smile

Thank you. I am sure there are many options and everyone has their brand etc.

I will look at the Canon, but what should I be looking for features wise?

I have also seen a Fujifilm s6800. Are these any good do you know? They seem very good value.

I don't know about the Fuji sorry.

Re features - a 'fast' lens is handy for indoor work so look for a low f number. Optical zoom is handy if you want to shoot things further away. There are loads of gimmicks but image quality is the main thing - try searching for online reviews or sample shots smile

If the word "bridge" is mentioned anywhere in the description then walk away. They are just a bulky compact camera with a silly low quality zoom lens and a price hike for good measure.

Canon S110, Fuji XF1, Panasonic LX7 or similar should do you nicely.
