what flash for Canon 500D, on a budget?

I'd like to get a flash for my girlfriend's 500D, as a present, however we have set ourselves a budget for Christmas and I don't want to spend more than £50-£75.

Is there anything in that price range that is worth having over the built in unit? She is a keen amateur, so I am not after all the latest features (tbh I don't even know what to look for...).

PS: While I'm at it, what accessories would you recommend for a photography enthusiast?

My 600d worked great with a jessops 360AFD, swivel head and slave option, fully auto with zoom
