As per the title of this thread, is this possible? I was thinking Nikon D3100 or possibly Pentax, any other suggestions/recommendations , btw it's not for me but for my 14 year old son.

Will easily pick up a Nikon D80 for that money with accessories and a couple of lenses. Better than a more modern entry level packed full of useless features and art filters.

I'd stick with Nikon / Canon. Lots of used gear with a 6 month warranty - http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

They have D3100 for £169, maybe a Nikon 18-55mm for £142 as well? Bit over budget there (like every time people buy camera gear hehe)

Body a reasonable price but £142 for an 18-55? seriously? You can get them used for £60. You would be much better going for an 18-70mm anyway which wont cost much more. £142? jesus.

You can buy a new D3100 with 18-55 VR for £279... £20 cashback makes it £259.

You might as well just get a new D3100 as they are dirt cheap now. No worries about secondhand plus a warranty to boot, and you can buy them anywhere. It may be a starter camera but technology moves on quickly and it will still produce amazing pictures once you learn how to use it.

Looks like you can buy a D3100 for about £260-270 new. Is a person better off buying a new entry level DSLR or get a used, slightly older mid-range DSLR. I'm aware that entry/mid-top level cameras differ in terms of having to go through menus vs having buttons all on teh outside of the camera. What about IQ? Or will the difference only really be noticable for a pixel peeper.

It will be perfectly fine for your son. All current DSLRs take great photos when use correctly.

I got a Nikon D3100 to upgrade from my Nikon 995 (used the 995 for around a year but I was desperate to upgrade)

I absolutely love my D3100, could I have gone 2nd hand on an older camra and got more camera for my money probably yes but I got a good deal I think

D3100, kit lens, battery grip, 3 batteries and 2 x 16GB SD cards for £230 - A close friend had bought it, took around 300 images on it and went back to his original camera (can't remember what model he has though)
