How best to show front and back of photo on a website?
Discussion
I am redoing our family history website and having been given a large number of old black/white family photos would like to feature them in galleries. Many have names and notes on the back which I would like if possible to show in some way connected to the photo. I could imagine a black arrow placed on opposite sides of the two scans (front and back) indicating that they were connected (a lot of work) or indeed shopping the two together although it seems a waste to lose half the space available for sometimes very few words on the back. Are there any other ideas that I haven't thought of which others have used? If it makes any difference I am using Joomla 2.5.
Put a "stamp" in the corner of each with something like "Photo 123 Front" and "Photo 123 Back". Make sure they have similar file names and are uploaded together so they appear adjacent and people will get it.
Also, if when you're scanning them in, you're able to give them sensible names like "Photo 123 Front.jpg" and "Photo 123 Back.jpg" then you can probably get some software which will then automatically apply the file name to the top corner as a "water mark".

How about writing the website code so that when you mouse over the image, a text box appears with the relevant information....
If it was just text then it could be typed up as a description. I get the feeling that the OP would want to retain the features of the hand written note, by including its image, rather than it's text content. (It would also mean having to type up all the cards, which may take too long to be feasible.)^^^^ That's right. I have several different languages and some original notes on the backs are from my research obviously incorrect, so there is a certain charm about being able to show the original "document" to later generations as well as the translation/corrections/explanation in text. I find it a fascinating hobby and the invention of the web to assist it was a godsend.

Look at these links. Pop up could work with a text box, before / after could work if you want authenticity. Scan both sides as mentioned then use the slider to go between the two.
If you're building in wordpress, I'd imagine both are available as plug ins.

Good luck, sounds like a great project.
