What size can I print these photos?
Discussion
Hi guys,
Had some photos taken of our baby a year ago, and we're really pleased with them
But
I want to get a couple of the printed in large former (we only have 5x7 printed of two of them)
So most of the photos are 5000x4500 pixels and 72dpi
How do i work out the largest photo we could have. We are thinking of a canvas print of 40cm by50cm- would the current files be enough for thus.if not what spec do we need?
No idea how a digital file translates into the real world?

Your problem there is the 72 dpi, not the 5000 wide.Had some photos taken of our baby a year ago, and we're really pleased with them

No its not. dpi in a digital file is utterly meaningless.72dpi means a print size of 70 inches at ... 72dpi!
You can just as easily print this at 300dpi and get a 16 inch print.
For canvas you can go as low as 100dpi easily depending on the source file.
A soft poorly shot and processed image - regardless of file resolution will look crap printed large.
So its hard to say without seeing the files but if they are pro shots done well then they can go to a reasonable size especially on canvas.
From the the low res pic on screen above I wouldn't like to say what the original file is like, but from a good 5000px x 4500px file you could make prints pretty much as large as you like and it should be fine for most everyday uses. I have a 6' x 4' canvas on the wall and that's from a 4300 x 2900 (12 megapixel) image, and it looks great. Bear in mind also that very large pictures you tend to look at from further away.
Don't get confused by DPI. It is simply a ratio, not an absolute measurement. Think of it as being analogous to miles per hour - it tells you how fast you are going (the resolution in this analogy), but not for how far (the dots) nor for how long (the print size) so by itself is of limited usefulness.

Can't remember exactly what he said but PH usually runs on the idea that someone is allowed to mention their business if it answers a poster's question. However they can't put link to their business on the post (in profile is OK). Was there one?Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
