Not a question for myself, but for a friend (I already own a Speedlight SB600).

He's looking for a flash that will work well with a D40, but he can't stretch to an SB600 - He's had a hunt on Amazon and as he puts it "you know photography" he's under the impression I can advise well.

I can't. I just wave and say "D3100, 35mm 1.8, Speedlight", make excuses and leave.

Can anyone guide as to flash that will work with a D40 and work well?

Thanks

JTW

Good power and build quality. Only con is no TTL but that is no big loss.
Just got one myself for £43 from a UK seller.
Think they do a TTL one as well if he wants to pay a bit more.
Either way you coul have at least 2 flashes for the price of a branded one.

The nissin Di622 is well worth a look. Does TTL and the MK2 version does iTTL though the D40 does not, future proof though. I have a couple and though I've used various other Nikon flashes over the years, I prefer the simplicity of these.

I bought a decent own make one from Jessops.

It does TTL and BL fill too as well as manual from full to 1/16th power and has built in diffuser and reflector for bounce flash.

It was only around £70 if I recall correctly.
