Setting up a website

Can someone give me an idea on how to set up a website to display my photos with a view to selling them online. The domain name I want is available.

I went to Zenfolio after some advice on here. Easy to do (as in I managed with not too much swearing) Mine is leportphotographic.co.uk you just select from the options available until you get something that looks the way you want.
I used Godaddy to register the name. Again it's simple with the only issue being that they email you about something most days.

I know this sounds a daft question but once I buy the domain name, is that mine as long as I pay for it. Is it a question of linking my website to that domain name

Yep - but don't ask me how as I've forgotten. 'DNS' seems to ring a bell, then my brain goes to mush.

Don't forget to set up matching e-mail addresses too.

Yeah pretty much, the zen folio creator part leads you through the process, also shows you how to get onto google etc.
You can also have an @zenfolio address I think.

Honestly I'm not a patient person and this is a completely new thing for me. If I can manage it anyone can!

Another vote for Zenfolio. My site is with them and I've been very happy. You can have a free trial. If you decide to go for it give me a shout for a referral code where we both get a few quid.

Zenfolio is a great way to go.

Or you can do what I do, which is buy the domain name, rent some web space, create your own site and link that name to the site you create.

I did this in the 1990s and have owned the domain and space ever since. I have to renew the domain name every 10 years.

I just add metatags (not too many), also make sure the 'prime' keyword is mentioned a lot in the first paragraph... but mainly, get sites to link to mine (which takes time). Currently 210 link in. I see I've dropped a few places... adding some poor album covers usually cures that

and I'm thinking of doing it myself, but the more research I do,

The best place to learn about SEO is the Google PDF that tells you pretty much what you need to do to rank well in Google.

The summary of it is that you don't need to worry about SEO, as long as your content is good and contains the words you need it to, Google will find it. Their software detects keyword stuffing and other similar tactics.
