Thinking of buying one for my missus for her birthday. Anyone know if they are good in general, if so are there some good makes to go for?

Depends on the use case, but for me (watersports, winter sports, general outdoors activities etc.) Olympus TG-1 has been tough, watertight and reliable even in -30 degrees. Plus I can use the controls even when wearing thick neoprene gloves. Picture quality is acceptable though not outstanding. I think they're up to TG-2 version now.

Are you talking diving type underwater ?

You can get pro waterproof cases for DSLRs', but IIRC they cost £00's plus the camera.
