Hi, I'm not a photography person so please be gentle!

I love taking time lapses, always taking one of various things, find it all very interesting

I've been using my iPhone for this which is good for a free app, but it doesn't allow me to take lapses when I'm working/ expecting a call

Can anyone think of a way I can do this reasonably cheaply without using my phone.

Ideally I'd like it to be not too costly so I could leave it out somewhere and not be too upset if it gets pinched

Also it's own battery / 12v operable would be beneficial as I could power if from and old motorbike battery

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thank you

I use these on site, recording construction or demolition projects from start to finish.

Very adjustable (can take shots from once every 24 hours, to 1 every 10 seconds) and has an option to hibernate or only be active during set times, weatherproof and quite rugged. Oh and it comes with some software to convert the files into videos.

Only slight issue is quite a narrow field of vision and pretty hungry for batteries on 10 second intervals. I tend to leave it on from 7-7 and 5 minutes between clips.

Bah, 20 years ago before all this stuff was invented I made £10,000 on a timelapse project... 4 SLRs, car batteries and rather a lot of film and slides... it paid for my first Jaguar!

That is brilliant.

Absolutely love it. Particularly the cartoon "light bulb above the head" moment that the guy says he had!

Many Canon cameras can be fired over a USB cable from a PC. We did a timelapse of our house build by buying a cheap point and shoot on ebay, sticking it in a security camera housing and running it off a spare computer. There are a number of free and low cost applications that can control the whole thing, stitch the photos together and adjust them for strobing and other side effects of timelapse.

Here's one video from the house build: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDw6Eh8wa0Q I think the camera cost 40 quid.

hehe

Some inexpensive compacts, and more expensive cameras, have built in timelapse features. For long period projects it its essential/useful to have a camera which can be plugged in.

Alternatively, for some cameras you can buy plug in intervalometers. I bought one for my camera from Amazon for €30. Linked is a basic (rubbish) time lapse I made, although using a number of takes and angles but you'll get the idea.
