I enjoy photography yet I can only be called a beginner compared to some of the pictures I see on here. As a rule I was always told not to photogrpaph into direct sunlight. However, whilst on holiday last week I took this picture and am well pleased with it.

What is the general opinion on here regarding sunlight?

That looks fine to me. Shooting against the light ('contre jour') is an excellent way to get certain effects. Sometimes you have to watch for lens flare and or reduced contrast, but a lens hood will reduce this.
One down point, unless you want a silhouette, is that the nearsides of objects will be dark - if they are near enough and you want them brighter, try using fill-in flash.
I find it hard to draw up 'rules' for photography - the main thing is to get a nice photo, and if that means breaking a so-called rule, it doesn't matter!
