Had look at jessops/comet etc today bad idea as v busy shops, but have narrowed down to Nikon (coolpix)
i think they are called.
which as an occasional camera user, should i go for,

Depends what you want to do and how much to want to spend:

As you can see there are quite a lot of CoolPixs!

My view is that once you get up to about £300, there's no point in spending more on a 'Point & Shoot'; you'd be better off saving and getting a DSLR. But it all depends on your desires

Sorry about that, £170 is top limit i think, and its just for Holidays/snapshots etc i'm not patient enough
for involved photography

That's cool, you can get great compacts for that money: I have the Olympus 410 (but in fact preferred the Mju 300 which is now only £133!)
Suggest you get a spare battery and more memory though. Enjoy
