How many digital images do you have.......

How many digital images do you have.... why do you have that many (few) and what do you use to keep track of them all ?

Approx 350 gb (many, many thousands) - taken over 16 years - on solid state backup, DVDs, in the cloud, and on 2 computers. Listed by date in folders. I have others taken earlier with medium format film and transferred onto CD. Cost me £45 a time!

Why?

Why?

I was just thinking how the whole process of photography has changed over the years, from the time when the cost of producing an image was a material consideration, and this would have dictated the care and attention that went into the capture of the image. In contrast, today there is no limit (apart from storage space) to the amount of images that can be captured - but do these images really exist ? if nobody ever sees them (apart from the original photographer)

It's a bit of a philosophical question , I guess - and I think the photographers attitude to how he/she operates may be determined by whether they have (in the past) been an analogue photographer...

.... or maybe I am talking complete bo11ox.... just wanted to get a few views and debate it..

Ah, okay... fair enough.

As for me, I display my work on my website, and make books and DVDs to sell, and I guess for every photo I take that I like, 40 bite the digital dust - so never get seen. But I'm crap/lazy enough to have such a bad batting average. Digital certainly promotes that, as I was FAR more 'mean' with my film photography as it was so expensive.

It doesn't necessarily mean I'm less careful in what I shoot, but I do shoot a shed load more.

I've got around 1000 finished sale ready images, they're stored on a mirrored NAS, two external drives, cloud storage, flickr and my website.

Just had a look at your site - some very nice pictures there.

Do you print them yourself ? If so, which printer do you use ?

I do occasionally print myself, I use a Canon Pro 9000 Mk2. To be honest I prefer to use my local printer, they know my style, what I want, what materials etc and the hassle is all theirs, not mine. They do a lovely job of printing and framing and are happy to squeeze a rush job in. Otherwise prints from my site are printed by One Vision or Photobox depending on which product.

More to the point, how many do you keep, and do you keep unedited versions or RAWs of everything?

My wife isn't a hobbyist, just takes a lot of photos, and insists on keeping everything. Bad shots, out of focus, heads cut off, the lot. Have been trying to encourage her to apply some sort of workflow, weed out the crap ones, keep the good at least. We're up past 1.5TB and growing just on hers - and all JPG.

I don't take that many, in all of last week's trip to Scotland I maybe took 150, over 5 days, that includes variations on a composition, and bracketing some shots.

I keep everything. Storage isn't dear any more. So from import I keep the raw file, then a full size TIFF once I've edited it. From there I drop down jpegs for web use etc. I delete the jpegs as they can always be replicated from the TIFF.

I use Media Pro to keep track of all my shots, it isn't everyone's cup of tea but works for me and interfaces nicely with Capture One Pro.

c140,000 pics about 1.5TB. Stored on 2TB drives internally and an external drive rotated monthly and stored away. Thinking of moving to 4TB and or 4-8TB NAS. Progressively weeding out stuff I don't want to keep.
