A few G16 photos.

Canon loaned me a G16 to take some shots with, possibly for point of sale and advertising (especially the astro). Considering I have an s95 which in my mind was 'about the same but a bit smaller' I was pretty surprised by what I could achieve with the slightly bigger camera.

The Sensor size ultimately lets it down on absolute IQ, these would make decent prints but not at the size an SLR would let you. It also has a few nice cool modes and features like the star trails mode. A built in 3 stop ND filter. And I actually used the viewfinder for some shots..

Some downsides though - not being able to disable long exp nr, 'manual focus' isnt really and that kind of thing

Magazine Bay , big storm blew over Christchurch, couldnt see a great spot so popped over to Lyttelton to get it in front of the water.


Same storm at sunset from the top of the hills. Bit of a challenging framing and like 2 photos in one..

Sand Dunes, prefer this to any I shot with the SLR..

In built star trail mode, was a full moon night so static astro wasnt going to work.

Impressive stuff, especially the astro. I don't suppose you've been able to compare with a G1X?

Not really shot with a G1x, its a little chunkier though, the viewfinder is poorer, the sensor is much bigger ( over 4/3rds smaller than aps-c). Lens is slower but the sensor should make up for that

Those are really nice shots. Shows you that skills transfer to any tool. Seems like its a great device for landscape, 3 stop ND filter and a fast lens.

Finding it hard to judge IQ though on those letterbox sized pictures but the colours are certainly fantastic =-)

How much post production did you do on those shots ? The Sand dunes has fantastic dynamic range, nothing appears blown and the colors are great. I am guessing you used the ND filter ? Looks like the sort of effect from doing a Guy Gowan style expose for the sky then luminance masks to bring the sand dunes back, would be very impressed if that was straight from camera.

In my experience (in an S110) that little Canon sensor has quite absurdly good dynamic range considering it's size. If you believe DXOMark it even outstrips my 5D in that regard.

Obviously there are compromises elsewhere but for landscape work it's amazing what they can put out.

(now if only my skills were as good as the OPs!)

I've had the G15 before and what I absolutely loved about it was built quality. It had that "1D-ness" about it It felt like you could use it in self defence if required.

It's built very well apart from perhaps the lens cover..?

As for the sensor it's good, it's actually a Sony manufactured part Exmoor so the dynamic range is fine

Thanks Rob, I assumed the viewfinder would be better with a bigger mirror.

It's the same size little optical window but the lens is much bigger and obscures about a quarter of the view

Ah, that does seem a bit rubbish. I guess they expect most users to use the screen.
