Yep Reuters and I assumer others have wifi'd cameras to a bank of picture editors selecting and posting to the agencies. Just never seen it real-time. Laptop and TV on at the same time.

Hardly a miracle when you are taking a live video feed anyway.

In theory any of use (well, more or less given a small investment in kit and comms) could grab a jpg frame from a camera (assume a suitable dslr for now) upload it to our web site via a mobile and have if displaying within seconds.

The benefit the news boys have over that would be a massive high speed pipe, a team of editors selecting the images they want and some tech people to tweak the image if necessary and ensure the upload and link work.

It's a bit more of a challenge on a personal level (and to the wallet) if you are a one man band.

When shooting events I use eyefi cards, as the shot is taken it fires across wifi to my assistant sitting at the laptop across the venue. This is just a scaled up version, wireless file transmitters rather than eyefi and a picture editor sticking it on the wires rather than my assistant printing them on a dye sub.

Still very clever when you think of how it would have been in film days.

We had sky news in work the other day, I was impressed that they were sending the footage back to london via 3G, the pack on the camera had 8 different SIM cards in it to build up a strong signal. Quite impressive.
