Hi all,

Need a little help.Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM

Im looking for a lens which matches the capabilities of my body bu doesn't break the bank. I do mainly motorsport photography with some concerts and social events but they are for free and only for my local brass band so keeping them happy is secondary to the cars.

My kit bag currently contains the following:

Cannon EOS 1d Mk.II
Cannon EOS 300d
Cannon EF-S 18-55 kit lens
Cannon EF 24-80
Cannon EF 70-300 non IS

I want a better lens for longer range work, the 300 just struggles with big runoffs at Silverstone and Rockingham. Dont necessarily need to worry about weight of the lens but price is key. The closer to £500 than £600 the the better.

Ive found an Exc++ condition Sigma 150-500 f5/6.3 on MPB in budget but would it fit the job?

If not I await your suggestions with interest. What with this being PH and all, Ill allow one suggestion to buy an MX5 or mapped 330d. Instructions to buy Nikon will result in flaming!

This being PH, I'll ignore your budget slightly and recommend the Canon 100-400L for just under a grand.

Whilst I'd recommend sticking with Canon where possible for longer lenses, if you know of a physical Sigma 150-500 within your price range and you can try it to confirm everything works, it's sharp, the motor and AF are all good etc, then that might fit the bill. Quality with Sigma seems a bit variable although a couple of people I've spoken to recently say they are reasonable when it comes to fixing faults.

Buy a much newer body and crop your images as needed. Stick with the lenses you have.

Sigma 50-500mm? Heard its a much better lens than the 150-500mm. Can be had for about £600.

The Mk.II is my 'new' body!! Ill upgrade that eventually but I don't see the point in going to a Mk.III so its either a 4 or an X, both of which require big investment. I'd have the X over the 4 for it's low light performance.

One of the items in the ideal kit bag. 100-400, 24-105 and a 1DX. I also thought about a 70-200 and a 2x Converter but its a lot more pricy than the sigma.

Ohhh, didn't know about that one and it's only £50 more. Thats one to think on I think. Isn't it a bit cumbersome though?
