I just about managed to finance a Canon 300D! and got it from jessops today.
i have purchased a uv filter of Jessops own brand which the manager told me are now made by Hoya?Sp.
I have to send off the cashback form for the card and money and i will charge the battery up tonight.
Boy am i excited.
Expect to be asked to comment on some really naff pictures this week as i have a week off work
Are there any immediate do's and dont's that you guys have found? in relation to the camera?
All the furniture in in the process of being pushed to the edge of the front room so i can lay it all out and have a good look and play!
I think i will have to adopt this photo a day discipline as well because this is a lot of money for me but apart from landrovers and sports cars, Photoghraphy is what i like so there we go; duly justified
Unfotunately there was no way i could afford the d70 at the moment.

Well done, Bilko, great choice.
Read the booklets while you're waiting for the battery to charge is the best advice I can give. That and get as big a CF as you can and keep pressing the shutter!

To be a true anorak you must lay all the bits out on the floor then post a pic of them

Thanks for the replies guys. Mark, great picture! was that taken while you were on your way head first into the surf?, if so, good timeing
thinking now of things and places to photoghraph. So far i have: Spider webs, frost, sunrise/set, tube station subways ( i love the clostrophobic curves and the coloured tiles ) Also i would imagine it's quite easy to get a feeling of excitement if you shoot the firght aproach to a bend, not knowing what may lie beyond....ahem, anyway. tramps and begars in subways done in sort of harsh black and white from 6/7 metres away maybe. Erm, water drips, light trails(shame i missed the full moon recently as a motorway pic from a bridge with light trails and the full moon would be good) although i would imagine the aperature time? needed to get the trail would be too long to get a good moon? Large birds landing on water in the park.
Sorry i am boring you, it's just that my head is flooding with ideas. Had a look at the manual and i think i understand the basics also i look at other peoples pics on pbase and crib their settings which i guess is as good a place to start as any.
is it best to leave the battery on all night for the first charge?, only it's been on for 3/4 hours now and i wanna get out, find a police car or something....ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!, i feel really excited

winter is a fantastic time of year for photography

I got the battery grip for mine which allows me to shoot all day

First thing you should do is experiment. No more waiting for films to come back from the lab. Try all those slow shutter speed/time delay pictures you always wanted to take, but didn't want to waste a whole film to get the shot you wanted.

Try something, if it works keep it, if it doesn't delete it. Repeat.

I popped into a camera shop in Basingstoke last weekend and noticed the cashback offer giving you a 300D + standard lens for under £600 (I forget the exact price, but it was "£500 and something").

I asked the chap if there was a choice of black body or silver, and he said that the black body was only available in the UK through Jessops but that it was freely available outside the UK.

What's all that about then?

Give it 6 months and you will be after a 20D! It's an expensive hobby this photography malarky. First it's the camera then the trips abroad to take the photos!

300d is a great camera though!

I've just ordered a 300D from Currys. Very much an impulse purchase as I have no idea about photography, but it was £430 after the rebate, so at that price I thought what the hell.

Any good websites I should be looking at to get me started? I know which way to point the camera (round, sticky out thing forward, right?) but that's about it at the moment

It's great to see a head so full of exciting ideas. You can't beat enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.
Now you just have to work out how to capture what's in your head - bone up on the fundamentals of photography, eg. shutter speed and aperture - and do read the manual from cover to cover. You probably won't understand it all at first (the D70 manual took me three evenings) but it means you have room to grow with it and learn new stuff when you're ready for it.
Then, when you see a subject that has potential, you'll stand a much better chance of getting a really good picture. Do the science, then add the art.
Enjoy!

Simpo; never a truer word spoken!!!!!
I was up at 5 this morning and i stuck my finger on the map and arrived at the seaside. great i thought, colour, action, wildlife, movement etc etc. And what did i get? FOG!!, and more fog. Infact the first time i saw the sun was on my way home at around 16:00.
Still i got out and filled my card; But!, i couldn't remember or figure out how to bring everthing together.
You got it, Mr. Auto mode came out for the rest of the day. Still, Rome wasn't built etc.
Such a shame though as there was this guy digging in the sand for fishy stuff. The trail of mysterious holes left behind this busy digger in the fog.
Brightly coloured holiday huts reminded me of the rain and upset stomach of a scout camp in the gloom
Out of 115 pics there are about 3 i liked. the reat seem like happy snaps to me.
This is my favourite! - untouched!...I like the way the fog lays a timeless blanket over the barriers.
As usual, suggestions and criticism is most welcome.

Nice picture, Bilko. Only way to improve that would be to have foreground interest/splash of colour, but I'm sure everyone here would be pleased to have taken it.

Thanks Martin. I think it's quite moody; depressing even. Which is why i like it - because it makes me feel something.
Actually owning a dslr has really made me appreciate the pictures you guys display here even more. Knowing the amount of work that goes into taking a picture.
Anyone can get lucky but to actually achieve the result you set out to get is something else.

And as long as you keep thinking like that I have no doubt you will become a VERY good photographer. I never will, I'm too lazy!
