Rubbish CF Cards

grrrrrr......

I bought my EOS 300D from a [edit]well known retailer [/edit] last week and I got a 256MB own branded CF card thrown in with the deal.

What a pile of (in polite terms), poo. I went on the Reading Toy Run this sunday (http://njrennie.plus.com/toyrun/) and I had about 5 corrupt pictures!!! I've never seen that before and I kept getting an Error 02 on my camera everytime I tried to access one of the pictures!

Anybody any idea what that could be?

Well error02 means a problem with the cf card, have you tried another card in the camera do you still get the error? Did you format the card in the camera before use? If I was you I would take it back to the shop and ask them to replace it.

I got a Lexar 128MB CF with my D20. It has done maybe 150 photos and every time I put it in the camera now it reads "Err CF". I will take it back to the shop but it's a 1&1/2 hour drive to Gibraltar, then all that mucking about getting off. I'll just have to buy the battery grip while I'm there to make it worthwhile.

Try reformatting your card. (Both of the above unfortunates.) Reformatting will completely free any space that remains on your card, even if you have deleted all of the images. It is a bit like defraging your computer's hard drive.

You can also get Image Rescue software made by Lexar (about £10) which will enable you to retrieve lost or deleted images from any brand or memory card type. It also checks cards for hardware or file system errors and enables you to reformat your card.

A trip to the place of purchase would be advisable if reformatting does not solve the problem.

Martin, it's a friggin' 20D!!!!

NB I got Image Rescue already installed on my Lexar card... 'software included' it said... no CD anywhere, box too small anyway... where's the damn software...? Aha!!!

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Turned out I had to buy additional software

Just bought the 2GB Sandisk Ultra II (well, friend picked it up in US for me).

I got it after looking at the CF database here : www.robgalbraith.com - he has done speed test for most cameras with just about every card...

The question you have to ask is - once you have an error on storage media of any sort, how long will you trust it for?

I had a card (low cost brand that I won) that exhibited errors. Formatting sorted it briefly but it would do the same again after not much time. Wasn't worth the risk.

Have Sandisk cards exclusively at the moment and haven't had a problem yet.

I use mainly Lexar and have a Sandisk too. So far only a prob with 1 Lexar, but re-formatting it sorted it out.
