(Apologies if this question has already been answered)

My friend is looking to get a new digital camera. He likes the idea of photography and would like a half decent camera, but limited by a budget of $500. I have already suggested the Nikon D70 route, but its too expensive and not enough justification understandably.

His favourites so far...

I think the Cannon is a better brand, but its $40 more with a lower optical zoom and lower specs.

Could anyone advise on which of the above is the better camera, and why. If they are both a bad choice, feel free to suggest some!

Thank you in advance.

my best advice is to see what they say about them on www.steves-digicams.com and www.dpreview.com - they seem to be the fairest, most balanced opinion.
