Should I go SLR
Discussion
Hi all, I'm looking for a bit of advice!
Due to a couple of things going on I might soon be in a position to upgrade to a canon EOS 300D. I've currently got a compact in the form of a Canon Powershot s500, and I think it's a great little camera.
So the question is, should I go to the SLR.
Before you shout "yes!" the only reason I am wavering is that as things stand, photography isn't really a hobby I can afford to get into heavily if it means having to spend tons of money on lenses, filters, etc etc.
I can always buy more lenses (a bit) later on if I need to, but right now, wouldn't be able to afford anything over and above the basic package
So will a 300D out of the box with a "standard" type lens offer me the flexibility of a compact?
Thanks all!

It won't have the same zoom range, but everthing else will be superior. The package will work fine and won't *need* any extras. You can worry about accessories, extra lenses etc. next year. That's a great thing about SLRs, you grow the system as you need/want to.
Like Lego for men

Yes!
I didnt, went for a minolta A2, which is a fine camera, more practical, and a decent do it all lense, but looking back I'd like the ability to change lenses and the larger sensor of DSLR's
I know what you mean. My canon s500 is only 4 months old. If only I could turn back time, I'd already have an SLR...

Thanks simpo! I knew I could expect good advice from you. However I notice that you didn't try to woo me over to the Nikon camp - are your powers slipping, or did you just know I couldn't afford a D70?
Now us D70 owners are in the lead with ownership, I guess Simpo has taken pity on thier numbers. I on the otherhand say
Don't be daft man, wait till you can afford the REAL thing

Just being professional
You said you'd be stretching it to get a 300D, so there was no point in suggesting anything more expensive. The 300D is very good value. just a pity about the name on the front
