I guess you were using your SB-880. Did you trigger it with the built in Nikon Flash?
SB800. Yes, triggered with the built-in Speedlight set to Commander mode. Took a bit of figuring out too! Does the SB800 have a button marked 'Wireless'? No it friggin' doesn't!
Later I managed to get both firing together - but whilst the above was a mistake, I rather like the atmosphere.

You've got a very cooperative model there
Try that with ours and I get one of three reactions; 1. B
ger off I'm sleeping, 2. B
ger off I'm eating, or 3. OK Now I'll have my picture taken. Oh what's that over there, I'm off to investigate
Agree on the atmosphere - very nice

How did you set the D70 to fire both together?

You send £20 to Simpo Industries
1) Set SB800 to wireless mode (this is a custom mode reached by holding the centre of the selector for 2 secs) and choose Group A Channel 3. Not user-friendly at all but persevere.
2) Set D70 flash to Commander mode in Custom menu. If you want the flash to contribute to the exposure (as opposed to simply triggering the slave) you need to select Manual flash and guesstimate the power needed.
I get the impression that once you start linking flashes, you have to set the power manually. Maybe they can't meter automatically as one flash doesn't know what the other is going to do?
Apologies for number of cat threads but I think they are one of the most challenging subjects. You can always do a dog one...
