I have the chance to buy a Nikon D5000 with a 18-55mm lens for £115.

Would this be a good DSLR to start off with taking photos?

Only problem there is is that it doesn't have a battery charger so I would need to buy one.

Thanks in advance!

It's a very good deal. And you can get a charger from ebay for under a tenner.

Yep, a decent price and a nice camera to start out with. A D5000 was my first DSLR.

Do you know any history of the camera? I only ask because coming with a battery and lens but no charger can imply it was stolen but of course there could be a myriad of other explanations too. It would also be worth finding out the shutter count. I think the D5000 is tested to around 150,000.

That's an excellent price with a lens. Won't usually get a body on its own for under £150.

Very capable camera. At that price I would snap it up, even without the charger. Make sure it's sound though.

Ditch the 18-55 and pop an 18-70 on and you're sorted.

Unsure if it is stolen. Comes with a carry case and the seller has said he hasn't used it much.
He wanted a bit more money for the camera but I said I am taking a risk if the battery is currently is dead and there is no charger, so he has lowered the price.

He said it broke and he never used the camera that much so didn't bother buying a replacement.
I've just gone to reformat the memory card and it has some pictures of people training with guns in the middle east redface I think I better call him to ask him if he wants the memo card back hehe

That's practically a starter home these days biglaugh

On an unrelated note, a friend of mine was pick pocketed on the London Underground a few years back, by someone dressed respectably in a suit....

I doubt he would have photoshopped his face on to another guys body to justify selling the camera hehe

I am in Liverpool laugh I'd hazard a guess that 50% of houses in the North West are under £200,000. My first house will certainly be under £150,000.

my girlfriend has a D5000

I would change the picture settings to either custom or vivid as the D5000 can be a little flat.

The 18-55 is ok, maybe get a 35mm or 50mm 1.8 prime 2nd hand but really the kit lens should be ok.

I'd change the fn button on the left hand side so that it controls ISO

Read up a bit so you understand shutter speed, F-stops and ISO and then get shooting full manual as soon as poss.

Its a really great lightweight DSLR

Good info
Thanks for that smile have been reading up on the iso, shutter speed and aperture on the digital photography school website. Some brilliant tips on there. Some if it really is flying over my head so may speak to someone I know who takes photos in a club and has taken some cracking pictures.
It really is an art. Not just about buying an expensive camera hehe

Yup. Anyone can buy an expensive camera, but if you don't know how to use it and the techniques how to get the photos you want, you'll just end up with the same pics you can get from any cheap compact camera.
