Yup, after months of looking wistfully through the window of Jessops, i've gone and bought a D70 and, well, i'm rather chuffed.

I did of course buy the 18-70DX kit, and got a 1GB CF card whilst I was at it. Oh, and a card reader. Im sure this isn't a list that will stop there!

<---thats me, hiding from my irate bank manager

Anyway, i've not had chance to take any real pictures yet, I took a couple of shots of my missus' face whilst she was asleep, but other than that, not a lot. I downloaded the shots onto this PC when I got home, and at first, my heart sank - the NEF file is 5MB. I thought that would never be big enough for the kind of quality i'm after. Anyway, I opened the picture up in PictureProject (slowest bit of software in the world, or just my PC?) and selected '100%', and quite frankly i'm amazed. I could see every tiny hair on the end of her nose, every pore in her skin - bloody incredible. The missus wasn't too impressed - in one fowl swoop she was turned from quite an attrative 21yo lady to a sweaty skinned, hairy lipped munter with a dap of saliva in the corner of her mouth (yes, really).

But hey, im pleased anyway!

Dave

Well done Mad!

IIRC the 5Mb NEF becomes a 17Mb TIFF afer processing...? Anyway, it goes to show that file sizes are not the be all and end all, it's the pic that counts.

LOL@Rico - i'll have that bet with you......and then close the thread

Simpo - yup, just found that out - installed the software and converted to a TIFF file. 17.5MB and very good quality. I'm sure a colleague (incredibly good photographer and not a fan of digital) will say that the quality isnt as good as film, but the thing is, the D70 image size is the same as a scanned film print - but without the drop in quality that you get from scanning the image in on a £40 flatbed scanner!! And TBH if it became a problem, i'm sure I could get a shot printed out at 5x7" at comparable quality and then just scan it

Oh, and Nikon Capture (anyone got a keycode generator for it?) is much much quicker than PictureProject.

Anyone round here still not got a D70? Must be in the minority

[minority]Well done mate![minority]
Looks like you bashed the plastic a bit more than me...just don't go looking at the manfroto website for a tripod!
Just been reading up on lenses and the kit lense is getting some good reviews, well better than the 300D kit lens thats for sure.
Seriousely though, you have some excellent quality stuff there ( as if you didn't know )so the platform for a lot of your photos may as well be good as well.
can't wait to see some pics mate.
Well done
Ian

Hello I think the question is opened up to "anyone not got an SLR" and there isn't many!

Anyway, why you suggesting I look like a small brown fish just because I don't have a D70?

My A70 is suiting me fine apart from weird colours coming from it!

Ah, yet another convert to the PH Nikon Club. I wonder if Ted will give us our own forum, seeing as we are now the MAJORITY DSLR users

Dave, guess you'll have to change your name to Sensible Dave now!
BTW, does this mean we're not all b45t4rd5 now?

Well done mate. Like me, you'll be looking out the window from some decent light so you can go and play.

V6GTO - nah, im a jammy b**tard too

Paul - tell me about it! I didn't get time yesterday and I was on a 6-hour skidpan course today - so no time to take pictures. I did take some shots of the local church tonight, but the shots are shiite as I forgot to research how to use the self timer, and it was dark outside - which means all my shots are a bit blurred where I was holding the button for 5 seconds
