OCT 2014 Post Processing Comp

Hi all, not sure if this will take off but I thought it'd be a good idea to have a monthly post processing comp like the photo comps.

The idea is a hi res photo is uploaded and simply process it in whatever way takes your fancy.

It'd be a great learning tool for us all if you could jot down a few notes on what program you used and a broad outline of the adjustments you made.

the winning poster as per the other comps puts up a pic for the next months and judges the next month.

I'll get us started for this month.

the original was a stitched pano - stitched in photoshop elements (default setting), and both sets of adjustments were made in aperture, increased contrast, levels balanced, saturation increases and in the second, whitebalance warmed up.

The original is a 150MB tiff file (stitched pano). I'm uploading it now and will drop a link when it's done. But i've a massively slow internet upload connection (rural OZ) so it'll be a fair few hours)

Great idea, I'll play. PhotoShop used to adjust levels, colour balance and saturation - with the sky, water and trees treated separately.

Hi Mojito.. the problems with this image that needs fixing are the shadow areas. A common problem with Panos is getting sufficient dynamic range over a wide area. The fix for this is to take 4-5 exposures and use PT GUI pro to HDR Pano stich them.

The area at the bottom of the pic in the middle around the reeds are lacking heavily in detail and look pretty grungy. I can probably clear that up but I need the RAW files to make a decent bash at it. Happy to stich it back myself.

Yeah I know, this was a spur of the moment shot from the side of the road. I didn't have time nor the inclination to set up a tripod etc which i should have done, so I fired off a few hand held images and stitched them when i got home. It's a shame as I think that this is a lovely image. I've deleted the RAW files so there won't be much more pulling out of detail in the shadows.

I thought that this would be an interesting comp to see what sorts of different processed images people would produce from a single base. In hindsight, it would have been better to post up a RAW image to give you all more latitude.

Still, that can be amended for the next round

I'm not sure about the above comment. Personally, I think you do need these dark areas. As far as I'm concerned, it's pretty well exposed. Obviously, it can be improved with a bit of tweaking but I like the image as it is.
