£8 p&p but still cheap. mAh not stated; Nikon is 1400, my generic one is 1500mAh. You could ask but at that price does it matter?!

Simpo,

my only hesitation is as they are SO cheap... is there any possibility that they could damage the camera?

I'm not an expert but the criteria as I understand it are voltage (7.2) and capacity (milliamp/hours or mAh). The voltage MUST be correct but capacity is just an indication of how much charge the batteries hold, ie how long they will last for.
However, remember your camera is an expensive and complex bit of kit, so if you have any doubts at all, play it safe and spend a bit more if you feel that will get you a 'better' product. I have a generic battery which works perfectly; it was about £15 inc postage for the US.

BUT - it is your camera and your decision alone!

Looks decent value to me - tell you what, if you get 2 I'll have one of them in exchange for a few beer tokens

The spec sheet does say 7.2v and I doubt they'd go to the trouble of designing and making a D70 battery at the wrong voltage so I'd be happy to take the small risk.
